Technology assessment of the green biorefinery

The aim of this project was an initial assessment of the concept of a green bio-refinery.

DThis assessment is based on a literature survey and expert interviews because no pilot plant exists as of yet and consequently there are no actual testing series and no experience with impact on a concrete region.

By means of sustainability criteria, developed in the project to assess the sustainability of the green bio-refinery, positive and negative aspects, uncertainties and arising conflicts were compiled. Options of action will be developed together with effected actors in a further project. Some matters have already become apparent

Sustainability is a complex topic. Therefore assessments have to be accomplished integratively, comprehensively, and interdisciplinarily.

Decisions made by consensus ease long term planning and also perpetuate the concept. This can be attained through participative procedures.

An Austrian-wide concept for the use of biomass and cultivatable land for renewable resources has yet to be developed.

Since grass has the potential of delivering a wide variety of substances as well as energy, it should be classified by the EU as a renewable raw material.
