Beneath the surface - what makes a material strong or tough - ESI, Leoben

The Erich Schmid Institute of Materials Science of the Austrian Academy of Sciences will host a day long workshop to explore how metals, ceramics, polymers, and composite materials can be tailored for specific applications. Participants will have hands-on demonstrations into how materials are made to be strong or tough. Different processing methods from severe plastic deformation, 3D printing, and even thin film deposition will be compared by examining the resulting microscopic and atomic structures and measuring mechanical properties including hardness and elastic modulus. Electron microscopy methods will be showcased along with in-situ mechanical testing inside a scanning electron microscope and under a confocal laser scanning microscope.
