Inhalte des Seminars: The language of genes: Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?

Kurzbeschreibung: Imagine you could have access to one of the oldest books ever written, a book older than language itself. A book  written with only four letters yet longer than any book you have ever read. This book contains critical information about your past, your present, and your future. Wouldn’t you like to read it? But there is one problem—its mysteries are all encoded! Welcome to your genome, welcome to your DNA. In this series of lectures, we will explore the science of genetics, from Mendel’s pea plants to CRISPR genome editing. Is it true that most of our genome is junk? Is the difference between a good or a bad student in their genes? Is there a genetic basis for race? Why is cancer so difficult to treat? How can we use your DNA to cure the diseases that may affect you later in life? These are only some of the questions we will address and discuss together.
