Um die aktuellen Probleme zu lösen, bedarf es einer integrativen Philosophie der Geschichte, die sowohl methodologisch reflektiert als auch inhaltlich fundiert ist. Johannes Rohbeck zeigt, dass zwar jede historische Darstellung von bestimmten Methoden des Erklärens und Erzählens modelliert wird, dass aber auch umgekehrt die Wahl historiographischer Methoden grundlegende Überzeugungen über den Gegenstand Geschichte voraussetzt. Kritisch rekonstruiert werden dazu die Geschichtsphilosophie von der europäischen Aufklärung bis zu Kant, Hegel und Marx sowie der Historismus, das Posthistoire und die analytischen Philosophie der Geschichte.
