Zu den Bildmaterialien, die W.G. Sebald in seine Texte einmontiert hat, gehören auch reproduzierte Postkarten: Sammelstücke, deren Auswahl Sebalds Vorliebe für bestimmte Bildmotive bestätigt. Anhand mehrerer Texte lässt sich eine Poetik der Postkarte rekonstruieren, die auf Medialität und Gebrauchsweisen der Postkarte Bezug nimmt, die Postkarte aber auch auf besondere Weise semantisiert: Als ‚Ansichtskarte‘, die den Betrachter nur scheinbar anblickt.

Among the visual materials that were integrated into W.G. Sebald’s texts there are also reproduced postcards. Collected by Sebald himself, they affirm his affinity toward certain image motifs. With reference to several of Sebald‘s texts, the article reconstructs his poetics of the postcard. It addresses the mediality of postcards and their conventional ways of usage, but it also attributes specific dimensions of meaning to them. Called “Ansichtskarte” (“looking card”, which means: card to regard/to look at, but can also be read as “regarding card”) the postcard belongs to the “Sebaldian” objects which only seemingly exchange glances with the observer.
