Die Erzählstrategie von Thomas Harlans ›Schwanensee‹ verweist exemplarisch für alle anderen Geschichten des Prosabands ›Die Stadt Ys‹ auf eine Erzähltechnik, die einen verstehenden Zugang vereitelt. Das stellt eine Ästhetik in Frage, die diesen Zugang voraussetzt und verweist auf eine Ästhetik der kunstvollen Irritation und Provokation.

The strategy of narration in Thomas Harlan’s ›Schwanensee‹ gives an example of how the narratology suggested by the stories of ›Die Stadt Ys‹ thwart easy access to understanding. That contests an aesthetics requiring easy readability and points instead to aesthetics of ingenious irritation and provocation.
