Unter den zahlreichen Vorlagen zu Bertolt Brechts ›Baal‹ befinden sich auch zwei zeitgenössische Werke des Expressionismus, Hanns Johsts Drama ›Der Einsame‹ und der Roman ›Ambros Maria Baal‹ von Andreas Thom. Die Texte verbindet eine ähnliche thematische Konstellation: Im Zentrum steht jeweils ein junger Dichter, der am Konflikt zwischen Künstlertum und Mutterbindung leidet und schließlich zugrunde geht. Damit können die drei Texte als Variationen einer typisch expressionistischen Künstler- und Generationenproblematik betrachtet werden.

Among the numerous literary sources of Bertolt Brecht's ›Baal‹, there are also two contemporary works of expressionism, Hanns Johst's drama ›Der Einsame‹ and the novel ›Ambros Maria Baal‹ by Andreas Thom. The texts are connected by a similar thematic constellation: In each case, a young poet stands in the centre, who suffers, and eventually dies, from a conflict between artistry and attachment to his mother. As a result, the three texts can be viewed as variations on the issues of artistry and the generation gap typical of expressionism.
