Is it possible to understand Celan’s poems on their own, without the secondary literature or
his biography and the Shoa? This article considers the first two poems – ›Ich hörte sagen‹ and
›Im Spätrot‹ from the volume ›Von Schwelle zu Schwelle‹. By analyzing the formal aesthetics of
the compositions and by exposing the motifs used in their relationship to one another, one can
discern a plot and thus provide a reading that includes the whole poem and is not limited – as
is often the case in secondary literature – to the isolated interpretation of single motifs.

Ist es möglich, Gedichte Celans aus sich heraus zu verstehen, ohne die Sekundärliteratur heranzuziehen
und ohne auf Celans Biographie und die Shoa zurückzugreifen? Der Artikel erprobt
an den ersten beiden Gedichten ›Ich hörte sagen‹ und ›Im Spätrot‹ aus dem Band ›Von Schwelle
zu Schwelle‹ eine solche Lektüre. Über die Analyse von bei der Komposition eingesetzten
formalästhetischen Mitteln, durch Herausarbeitung der verwendeten Motive in ihren Beziehungen
zueinander wird ein Handlungsablauf erkennbar und damit eine Deutung möglich,
die das ganze Gedicht einbezieht und sich nicht nur – wie häufig in der Sekundärliteratur – auf
die Interpretation einzelner Motive beschränkt.
