Im Gesamtwerk von Ingeborg Bachmann nimmt das Übersetzen einen relativ kleinen Raum ein. Und doch ist die Dimension des Sprachkontakts eine Voraussetzung ihres Schreibens. Es geht hier also nicht um eine Kritik an Bachmanns Ungaretti-Versionen, sondern um das Übersetzen als aneignende Vermittlung und als poetologisch-ethisches Axiom, zu dem sich die Dichterin konkret geäußert hat: „Übersetzen ist die erste Pflicht, auch wenn sie nicht in die Charta der Menschenrechte aufgenommen ist.“

Translation was not one of the major engagements of Ingeborg Bachmann. Nevertheless the experience of language contact counts as one of the premises of her writing. For this reason we are not concerned with a critique of her translations of Giuseppe Ungaretti’s poetry but consider translation as an appropriating medium and a poetological and ethical axiom; as the poet herself expressed it: “Translation is a primary commitment although it is not included in the Charter of Human Rights.”
