The Lexikon zur byzantinischen Gräzität (LBG), a dictionary towards the Byzantine Greek language, records new and rare words and word meanings emerging in the Byzantine period. It is based on the Greek-English Lexicon by Liddell – Scott – Jones and on Lampe’s Patristic Greek Lexicon. Thus the LBG bridges the gap between the dictionaries of Ancient and Patristic Greek on the one hand, and the Dictionary of Vernacular Greek Literature by Kriaras on the other.
The LBG consists of two volumes of four fascicles each. Volume I (A–K) was published between 1994–2001, volume II (Λ–Ω ) between 2005–2017. Addenda that have been collected over the last years are currently prepared for publication and will be made accessible online.
The LBG was initiated by Erich Trapp and – in collaboration with Wolfram Hörandner and Johannes Diethart – was a joint project of the Commission for Byzantine Studies at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the Department of Philology at the University of Bonn and the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies at the University of Vienna, financially supported by the Austrian National Research Foundation (FWF). With the financial support of the German Research Foundation (DFG), Dr. Astrid Steiner-Weber, Dr. Sonja Schönauer, Dr. Maria Cassiotou-Panayotopoulos and Dominic Mertzanis M.A. were working on the project at Bonn University until 2013.
In cooperation with the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae/University of California, Irvine (TLG), the LBG is provided online. The LBG online version is also accessible without a TLG license after free registration and login.
